The Seed of Faith (3-1)

The Seed of Faith (3-1)

The Recognition Process
When Jamyang Khyenste Rinpoche of Dzongsar, the regent of the impartial teachings, visited Kham, he said that this son of the enlightened family was certainly a genuine spiritual being of the Nyingma tradition which maintains the ancient translations. Apart from that, on account of certain temporary obstacles that had to be resisted, he did not declare him by name as the reincarnation of Kyabje Dudjom Jigdral Yeshe Dorje, but nonetheless meaningfully recognized him as such.

By means of the transmission of the prayer to Manjughosa that begins with the words “He whose intelligence…” (gang gi blo ma) and the Yab ka mtsho-skyes thugs thig, a treasure of enlightened intention brought forth by the previous great treasure finder Dudjom Rinpoche, he conferred upon the child the maturational empowerments through which the three secret centres of his body, speech and mind assumed the essence of the immortal Saroruhavajra. He conferred the name Pema Osal upon him—an act that had a genuine purpose.

In this regard, the late great treasure finder Dudjom Rinpoche had remarked in a letter to Dola Rinpoche, conveyed through his daughter Pema Yudron, that although he had promised that father and son would certainly meet, there would actually be no further meeting of father and son during their lifetimes. Rather, they should look to do so in the future. In accordance with that prophecy, the dakini Tare Lhamo, who was an emanation of the buddha-mind of Sera Khandro, made a significant prophecy to the effect that:
On the turquoise tree of the secret mantras,
Where bliss and emptiness are coalesced on the path,
The glorious and powerful shoots of a lotus will smile.
With such words she declared him to be the unmistaken reincarnation of the lord of refuges Dudjom Rinpoche.

From the time when he was very small, the child handled the vajra and bell and made the appropriate mudras. Holding the rosary, he counted mantras containing names such as Vajra Guru. All his forms of childhood play were also exclusively directed towards explaining the sacred teachings, conferring empowerments and so forth. In all respects he possessed a steadfast and uncontrived faith, endowed with reason and knowledge, in the meditational deities and the Three Precious Jewels, as well as an innate sense of great compassion which looked upon all sentient beings with love. For these reasons, all impartial observers respected him and prayed to him.

When Jigme Phuntsok, the great monastic preceptor and genuine lord of the sacred teachings, visited Zhiwu in Kham, he highly esteemed the boy, saying 'He is the unmistaken incarnation of my ancestor!' He offered him an initial connection with his teachings (chos ‘brel), granting the prayers and transmissions of the sNang srid dbang du sdud pa, forming a great cloud of blessings.

During the following year, in the midst of a gathering of tens of thousands at Larung Gar in Serta, he was enthroned as a master of the teaching of the ancient translation school. Similarly, he was also enthroned at glorious Nyenlung Monastery, by Namtrul Rinpoche and Tare Lhamo. Subsequently, in the midst of a vast gathering at the teaching college (chos grva) of Dzongsar Tashi Lhartse, the lord of refuges Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche also enthroned him in an elaborate ceremony, as the reincarnation of the great emanational treasure finder Dudjom Rinpoche.

Around the same time, there is a wonderful account of how the lord of refuges Minling Tri Rinpoche, who was a regent of Padmakara, through the pristine cognition of his unobscured and all-knowing buddha-mind, experienced a vision in which the boy was praised as the unmistaken reincarnation of his predecessor, the lord of refuges Dudjom Rinpoche.

In this regard there was a lama from Kham named Ngawang Tenpei Nyima, who while on pilgrimage went to meet Minling Trichen, bringing with him a photograph of Yangsi Rinpoche. As soon as the lama reached the entrance to his private quarters, Minling Trichen stood up and said, “Come in quickly! This is a very auspicious coincidence!” He accepted the photograph and just upon seeing it, placed it upon his head and said, “Today I have actually seen the lord of refuges Dudjom Rinpoche!” In a disposition of great joy, he conferred the blessing of the photograph upon all those who were nearby and finally held it in his hands and said, “This is the unmistaken reincarnation of the lord of refuges Dudjom Rinpoche!”

Simultaneously he offered a butter lamp to the photograph and issued a signed edict stating, “This is the unmistaken reincarnation of the lord of refuges, holder of indestructible reality!”
